The process behind crystal-clear ice — controlled freezing, water filtration, evaporator plate design, and harvest cycle timing.

Why dedicated ice makers produce clearer ice

Standard refrigerator ice makers freeze water quickly in small molds, trapping air bubbles and impurities that create cloudy, white-streaked cubes. Thermador dedicated ice makers use a different approach designed for clarity.

The freezing process

Water flows over a chilled evaporator plate in a thin film. Freezing happens slowly from the plate surface outward, pushing dissolved air and impurities away from the freezing front. This directional freezing is the same principle commercial ice companies use — it’s why restaurant ice is clear while home ice is cloudy.

Water filtration

The built-in water filter removes chlorine, sediment, and particulates before water reaches the evaporator. Cleaner water = fewer impurities to get trapped during freezing = clearer ice. Hard water minerals (calcium, magnesium) are partially filtered but also accumulate as scale on the evaporator plate — this is why regular descaling is critical for maintaining ice clarity over time.

Harvest cycle

When ice reaches the target thickness on the evaporator plate, the harvest cycle begins. The system briefly warms the plate surface just enough to release the ice sheet, which drops into the bin and breaks into individual cubes. If the evaporator is scaled or the thermostat is mis-calibrated, the ice may not release cleanly — triggering error E1.

Maintaining clarity

Replace the water filter every 6 months. Descale the evaporator quarterly (monthly in hard water areas). Use filtered or softened water if your supply is hard. Clear ice is a sign of a well-maintained ice maker — cloudiness developing over time usually means the filter or evaporator needs attention.
