Cabinet cutout preparation
Freedom Columns install flush with surrounding cabinetry using Thermador’s Freedom Hinge system. The cutout dimensions must match the installation manual exactly — each width (18″, 24″, 30″, 36″) has specific height, width, and depth requirements. Leave the specified clearance above and on the sides for ventilation. The floor must be level — an unlevel column stresses hinges and misaligns panel-ready doors.
Electrical requirements
Each column requires its own dedicated 120V, 15-amp outlet. The outlet should be positioned per the installation template — typically behind the unit, accessible without moving the column. Do not daisy-chain outlets or share circuits between columns — each compressor draws significant startup current.
Water supply (refrigerator and ice maker columns)
A cold water supply line with a dedicated shutoff valve is required for refrigerator columns with ice makers and for standalone ice maker columns. Use a braided stainless steel supply line (not copper tubing, which can kink). Water pressure must be 20-120 PSI.
SideTouchControl installation
The SideTouchControl panel installs between adjacent columns, recessed into the cabinetry. A communication cable connects each column to the panel. Run the cable before sliding columns into position — it’s nearly impossible to access afterward. After power-on, follow the SideTouchControl pairing wizard to register each column.
Panel-ready door installation
Custom panels must meet Thermador’s weight and dimension specifications exactly. Oversized or overweight panels stress hinges and affect door alignment. Use the panel mounting template provided with the unit. After mounting panels, verify the door closes fully and the gasket seals evenly on all edges.
