Thermador freezer terminology

Understanding these terms helps you communicate with technicians, follow your owner’s manual, and make informed service decisions.

  • Freedom Column: Thermador’s modular full-height freezer unit — panel-ready, installs flush with cabinetry, operates independently with its own compressor
  • SuperFreeze: Rapid-freeze function that temporarily drops temperature below 0°F for loading large quantities of unfrozen food. Auto-deactivates after 6 hours
  • SideTouchControl: Unified control panel connecting paired Freedom Column units (freezer + refrigerator) for combined temperature management
  • Sealed system: The closed refrigerant circuit — compressor, evaporator, condenser, and refrigerant. Requires EPA-certified technicians for service
  • Evaporator: Component inside the freezer where refrigerant absorbs heat, creating cold. Located behind the interior back panel
  • Defrost cycle: Automatic heating cycle that melts frost from the evaporator every 8-12 hours. Failure causes frost buildup (error E2)
  • Bi-metal thermostat: Temperature-sensitive switch in the defrost system that tells the heater when to turn on and off
  • Compressor: The motor that pumps refrigerant through the sealed system. Located at the bottom/back of the unit
  • Start relay: Electronic component that helps the compressor motor start. Clicking sounds indicate relay failure
  • NTC thermistor: Temperature sensor that reads freezer cavity temperature. Sends data to the control board for regulation
