How SoftClose works
Thermador Professional wall ovens feature SoftClose doors — hydraulic damper pistons built into the door hinges that control the closing speed. When you release the door from any angle up to about 90°, it closes smoothly and silently under its own weight, cushioned by the hydraulic dampers. This prevents slamming, protects the door seal, and adds a premium feel to the oven.
Signs of wear
Door slamming: The hydraulic fluid has leaked from the damper piston, or the piston seal has failed.
Door closing too slowly: Unusual — may indicate a partially seized damper or hinge pivot issue.
Door not closing fully: Hinge spring may be broken, or the damper is creating too much resistance.
Uneven closing: One hinge damper has failed while the other still works — the door closes crookedly.
Repair process
The SoftClose hinge assembly is replaceable without removing the oven from the cabinet (in most installations). Each hinge contains the damper piston, hinge arm, and spring. The damper is not separately serviceable — the entire hinge assembly is replaced as a unit. Both hinges should be replaced simultaneously even if only one has failed — they age at the same rate.
DIY or technician?
Hinge replacement requires removing the oven door (disconnect the hinge locks, lift the door off). While technically a handheld repair, Professional series oven doors are heavy (40-60 lbs). A technician can complete this repair in 30-45 minutes.
