What to do during and after a power outage with your Thermador refrigerator — food safety timeline, door protocol, and recovery steps.

During the outage

Keep both doors closed — every opening lets cold air escape and warm air in. A fully stocked Thermador dual-compressor refrigerator maintains safe temperature for approximately 4 hours with doors closed. The freezer section maintains safe temperature for 24-48 hours depending on how full it is (a full freezer holds cold longer than a half-empty one).

Monitor the timeline

Note when the power went out. If you have a standalone thermometer inside the refrigerator, check it when power returns without opening the door (some digital models display through the door). Safe food temperature: below 40°F for the refrigerator, below 0°F for the freezer.

When power returns

  1. Check the temperature display — if your Thermador shows the temperature without opening the door, read it first
  2. If the refrigerator section stayed below 40°F — all food is safe
  3. If temperature rose above 40°F for more than 2 hours — evaluate each item individually. Discard raw meat, fish, dairy, and cut fruits/vegetables. Condiments, hard cheeses, and sealed beverages are usually safe.
  4. Check the freezer — if food still has ice crystals, it can be safely refrozen
  5. Freedom Column users: verify SideTouchControl restored communication (check for E15). Reset both columns if needed by unplugging for 5 minutes.

After recovery

Run the refrigerator for 2-4 hours before assessing its cooling performance. Activate SuperCool if available to speed recovery. If the unit doesn’t cool normally after 6 hours, the power surge may have damaged the control board or compressor relay — Schedule service online.
