Water quality and ice clarity
Crystal-clear ice requires clean, filtered water with low mineral content. Hard water (high calcium and magnesium) produces cloudy, white-streaked ice and accelerates scale buildup on the evaporator plate. The Thermador ice maker’s built-in filter addresses common contaminants, but water hardness requires additional consideration.
Understanding your water
Municipal water quality varies by region. Test your water hardness: under 60 mg/L is soft (ideal), 61-120 mg/L is moderately hard (acceptable with regular descaling), over 120 mg/L is hard (consider an upstream softener or filter). Well water often has higher mineral content and may contain sediment that clogs the ice maker’s filter prematurely.
Filter maintenance
Replace the Thermador water filter every 6 months — even if production seems normal. A gradually clogging filter reduces flow rate slowly enough that you won’t notice until production drops significantly. In hard water areas, replace every 4 months. Use genuine Thermador filters for correct flow rate and contaminant reduction specs.
Descaling the evaporator
Run the ice maker cleaning cycle every 3 months (monthly in hard water areas) with an ice maker cleaning solution. This removes mineral scale from the evaporator plate that can cause ice to stick during the harvest cycle and reduce production efficiency.
Taste troubleshooting
Bad-tasting ice: replace the filter first. If taste persists with a new filter, empty and sanitize the bin (baking soda and warm water), then discard the first two batches of new ice. Persistent taste issues may indicate a water supply problem — test your tap water directly.

When DIY troubleshooting is not enough
Some Thermador ice maker issues can be resolved with the steps in this guide. However, call a certified technician immediately if you encounter:
- Gas smell (gas models) — turn off the appliance, open windows, leave the house, call from outside
- Burning smell or smoke — disconnect power immediately. Do not use until inspected
- Electrical sparking — turn off at the circuit breaker. Wiring or component failure
- Water leaking inside walls — shut off supply and call to prevent water damage
- Error codes that return after power reset — persistent codes indicate real component failure
- Sealed system issues — compressor, refrigerant work requires EPA-certified technicians
