Thermador dishwasher loading for optimal results
How you load a Thermador dishwasher directly affects wash quality. The Star Sapphire, Emerald, and Sapphire all use a precision spray system that relies on unobstructed water flow to every item. A poorly loaded rack blocks spray arms, creates water shadows, and leaves dishes dirty — even with a perfectly functioning machine.
Bottom rack
Place large, heavily soiled items (pots, pans, baking sheets) face-down and angled toward the center spray arm. Don’t nest items — overlapping dishes block water from reaching interior surfaces. Keep tall items at the sides and back so they don’t block the upper spray arm from reaching the top rack.
Upper rack
Cups, glasses, and small bowls go face-down and angled so water drains off. Don’t place items flat — they’ll collect dirty water. Long utensils (spatulas, serving spoons) can go horizontally on the upper rack if they don’t fit in the cutlery basket. Leave space between items for water circulation.
Third rack
The third rack is designed for flat utensils (knives, whisks, ladles), espresso cups, and small ramekins. On Star Sapphire models with dedicated third-rack spray, this rack gets its own water supply — take advantage of it for items that need direct water contact. Don’t overload the third rack — items shouldn’t overlap or the spray can’t reach them.
What not to load
Crystal and hand-painted items (too delicate). Cast iron (removes seasoning). Sharp knives (dulls the edge and can cut the rack coating). Non-dishwasher-safe plastics (check the symbol on the bottom). Wooden cutting boards and utensils (warps and cracks).

Important notes for Thermador dishwasher owners
- Always use genuine OEM parts — aftermarket components may fit but can compromise performance, safety, and warranty coverage on Thermador appliances
- Never ignore error codes — Thermador codes are diagnostic aids designed to prevent small issues from becoming major failures. Address them promptly
- Keep your owners manual accessible — it contains model-specific maintenance schedules and troubleshooting trees. Digital versions are available on the Thermador official site
- Document issues before calling — note error codes, symptoms, when they started, and patterns. This helps the technician diagnose faster
- Use surge protectors — power fluctuations damage electronic control boards. A quality surge protector protects your investment
Preventive maintenance saves money
Regular maintenance is the most cost-effective way to extend your Thermador dishwasher lifespan and avoid expensive emergency repairs.
- Annual professional inspection — catches wear before failure. Critical for gas connections, sealed systems, and electronics
- Filter replacements on schedule — water, air, and carbon filters have finite lifespans. Running past service life degrades performance
- Gasket and seal checks — door gaskets and hose connections develop micro-leaks over time. Quarterly visual inspection prevents damage
- Cleaning as maintenance — buildup of grease, food debris, mineral scale, and dust directly contributes to component failure
