Essential safety practices for Thermador ranges — gas leak detection, Star Burner flame monitoring, oven ventilation, and child safety.

Gas safety for Thermador ranges

Thermador gas and dual-fuel ranges use natural gas or LP (propane) for the cooktop burners. Gas appliances require respect for safety protocols that electric-only users may not be accustomed to. Understanding these basics protects your family and your home.

Gas leak detection

If you smell gas (rotten egg odor) near your Thermador range: 1) Do not turn on any switches or lights. 2) Do not use your phone near the range. 3) Open windows. 4) Turn off the gas supply valve behind the range if safely accessible. 5) Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Never ignore a gas smell — even a faint odor warrants investigation.

Star Burner flame safety

A healthy Star Burner flame is blue with small yellow tips. Entirely yellow flames indicate incomplete combustion — the air shutter may need adjustment or the burner ports are clogged. Never leave a burner on unattended for extended periods. The five-point Star Burner design provides wide coverage — be aware that flame extends further from center than traditional round burners.

ExtraLow simmer precautions

At the ExtraLow setting, the flame is very small and can be extinguished by drafts or boilovers. If you smell gas while cooking on ExtraLow, the flame may have gone out — turn the knob off, wait 30 seconds for gas to dissipate, then relight. Thermador ranges have a flame supervision device (thermocouple) that should shut off gas if the flame goes out, but don’t rely solely on this safety feature.

Oven safety

Never use the oven for heating your home — this creates carbon monoxide risk. Keep the oven vent (usually at the back of the cooktop) unobstructed. Don’t line the oven floor with foil — it can block airflow and cause overheating. During self-clean, keep windows open for ventilation and don’t leave the house.

Child safety

Use the cooktop lock feature to prevent children from turning knobs. Don’t leave pot handles extending over the counter edge. Keep the oven door closed when not in use — children can be burned by the hot door glass, which reaches 150-200°F during operation even with multi-pane glass.

Frequently asked questions about Thermador ranges
What makes the Star Burner different?
The patented five-pointed design delivers 56% more flame coverage than round burners. The star shape eliminates cold spots and supports ExtraLow simmer down to 100°F — precise enough to melt chocolate without scorching.
What’s the difference between Professional and Pro Harmony?
Professional has a raised cooktop with bold commercial-style knobs (requires a 10″ backguard). Pro Harmony sits flush with standard 36″ countertops — no backguard modification needed. Same Star Burner technology and oven performance in both.
Gas vs dual fuel — which is better?
Gas: simpler installation, lower cost. Dual fuel: gas burners on top with electric True Convection oven — more precise oven temperature control. If you bake frequently, dual fuel is worth the investment.
How do I clean Star Burner ports?
Use a pin or thin wire weekly — never a toothpick (wood can break inside the port). Remove burner caps, wash with soap and water, dry completely before replacing.
What size range do I need?
30″ for standard kitchens (4 burners). 36″ for the sweet spot (6 burners). 48″ Pro Grand for serious cooking (6 burners + griddle + dual ovens). 60″ for commercial-scale home kitchens.
