What is zeolite?
Zeolite is a naturally occurring microporous mineral that absorbs water molecules and releases heat energy in the process — an exothermic adsorption reaction. Thermador CrystalDry uses a cassette filled with zeolite granules positioned in the airflow path between the wash tub and the drying circuit.
The drying cycle
During the drying phase, a fan pushes warm, moist air from the wash tub through the zeolite cassette. The mineral absorbs the moisture, and the heat generated by this absorption is redirected back into the tub. This creates a hot, dry environment that evaporates remaining water from dishes — including plastic items that resist condensation drying.
Self-regeneration
During the next wash cycle, hot wash water (140°F+) passes near the zeolite cassette. The heat drives out the absorbed moisture, resetting the mineral for the next drying cycle. This self-regenerating process is designed to last thousands of cycles — effectively the lifetime of the dishwasher under normal use conditions.
Why it matters
Traditional condensation drying works well for glass and ceramic but leaves plastics wet — water doesn’t sheet off plastic surfaces efficiently. CrystalDry generates enough heat to dry even plastics completely, eliminating the need for a heated dry element (which uses significant electricity and can warp delicate items).
