Thermador grill ignition problems
Thermador grills use ceramic rod igniters — more reliable than piezo igniters but still susceptible to outdoor conditions. If the igniter clicks but the burner doesn’t light: 1) Clean the igniter tip with fine sandpaper. 2) Check the electrode gap (should be 3-4mm from the burner). 3) Look for spider webs or insect nests in the burner tubes — this is the #1 cause of burner failure after off-season storage. 4) Try lighting manually with a long match to verify gas flow.
Uneven heat
Clean all burner ports with a wire brush — clogged ports cause hot and cold spots. Check that burner tubes are properly seated in the venturi (the air/gas mixing tubes). Inspect heat distribution plates or flavorizer bars — warped or corroded plates create uneven heat patterns.
Excessive flare-ups
Clean the grease management system — tray, channels, and drip pan. Trim excess fat from meat before grilling. Reduce heat if flare-ups are frequent. If flare-ups occur even with a clean grill, the flame taming system may be damaged or missing.
Infrared searing zone not hot enough
The infrared ceramic tile needs 5-10 minutes of preheating to reach full searing temperature. If it doesn’t reach temperature after 15 minutes, the ceramic tile may be cracked (visually inspect) or the dedicated gas valve may not be opening fully.
When to call a technician
Gas smell with burners off (safety issue — call immediately). Ignition module failure (no sparks on any burner). Cracked infrared tile. Built-in gas line connections. Schedule grill service.
