Refrigerator lifespan
Thermador refrigerators are built for 12-20 years. Freedom Column units, with independent sealed systems and modular design, can last even longer since each component ages independently. The dual-compressor architecture means failure in one compartment doesn’t condemn the entire unit.
Always repair
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor — common, cost-effective
- Temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) — inexpensive, quick replacement
- Electronic damper motor — restores proper airflow regulation
- Door gasket — maintains seal and energy efficiency
- Water inlet valve — simple swap for ice maker/dispenser issues
- Ice maker module — mechanical component, doesn’t affect cooling
- LED lighting module — trivial repair
- Control board — expensive but restores full function to a unit with years of life ahead
Evaluate carefully
- Single compressor failure on a dual-compressor unit — sealed system repair (compressor + refrigerant + labor) is significant but replaces only half the cooling system while the other half keeps working
- Multiple sealed system leaks — may indicate systemic corrosion, even if each individual leak can be repaired
When to replace
Both compressors failing on a unit over 15 years old. Multiple refrigerant leaks in the same circuit. Severe cabinet insulation degradation (exterior feels warm). If upgrading from a French door to Freedom Columns (lifestyle upgrade).
Freedom Column advantage
With Freedom Columns, you replace only the failing column — not the paired refrigerator, freezer, or wine column. This modular approach means you’re never forced to replace the entire refrigeration system for one unit’s failure.
