Why a star shape?
The Thermador Star Burner is a patented five-pointed design — and the shape isn’t decorative. Traditional round burners create a ring of flame that leaves cold spots in the center and at the outer edges. The star’s five points extend flame further outward, and the recessed center channels flame inward, providing 56% more flame coverage than a round burner of the same BTU rating. This means faster, more even heating with fewer hot spots.
Five-point flame distribution
Each point of the star contains multiple flame ports arranged along its length. Gas flows through the burner base, up through the star’s channels, and exits through dozens of small ports along each point. The result is a continuous flame pattern that covers the full diameter of the pan — not just a ring at the edge.
ExtraLow simmer
ExtraLow is possible because of the Star Burner’s precise gas valve design. The valve can throttle gas flow to an extremely low level while the star shape’s wide port distribution keeps the flame stable. A round burner at the same gas flow would produce an inconsistent, flickering flame that could extinguish. The star’s geometry maintains flame stability down to approximately 100°F surface temperature — precise enough to melt chocolate or hold hollandaise.
The thermocouple safety system
Each Star Burner includes a thermocouple (flame supervision device) that monitors whether the flame is actually burning. If the flame goes out (from a boilover, draft, or ExtraLow instability), the thermocouple detects the temperature drop and signals the gas valve to close — shutting off gas flow within seconds.
