Thermador range lifespan
Thermador ranges are built for 15-20+ years. Professional and Pro Harmony use commercial-grade components that withstand decades of daily cooking. Star Burners, cast-iron grates, and stainless steel construction don’t wear out — internal components (igniters, valves, sensors, control boards) are what eventually need attention.
Always worth repairing
- Star Burner igniter replacement — common, inexpensive relative to range cost
- Oven temperature sensor — straightforward swap
- Convection fan motor — restores True Convection without replacing the oven
- Individual gas valve or knob — one burner’s valve doesn’t condemn the range
- Control knob replacement
- Door hinge or spring
Evaluate carefully
- Control board on a range over 12 years old — boards are expensive and if other components are aging, cumulative costs add up
- Oven cavity enamel damage (flaking, rusting) — not repairable, indicates oven nearing end of life
- Pro Grand steam generator repeated failures — if descaling doesn’t resolve and the generator has been replaced before
When to replace
Multiple simultaneous failures on a range over 15 years old. Gas manifold leak or cracked internal gas line (safety issue — not economical to repair). If upgrading from a 30″ to a 48″ Pro Grand — that’s a lifestyle upgrade, not a repair decision.
Pro Grand special consideration
Pro Grand 48″ and 60″ ranges are substantial investments. The griddle, steam oven, warming drawer, and dual ovens each have independent serviceable components. A failure in one subsystem doesn’t condemn the entire unit — repair the specific component.
