Installation requirements for Thermador under-counter and column ice makers — water supply, drain, electrical, and ventilation.

Location selection

Thermador ice makers install as under-counter built-ins (18″ or 24″) or Freedom Column units. Choose a location near a cold water supply and drain connection. The unit needs adequate ventilation — built-in installations must have the front grille unobstructed for condenser airflow.

Water supply

A cold water supply line with a dedicated shutoff valve is required. Water pressure must be 20-120 PSI — below 20 PSI results in slow fill and undersized ice cubes, above 120 PSI can damage the inlet valve. Use braided stainless steel supply tubing (not plastic or copper, which can kink). If your household water is hard (above 120 mg/L), consider an upstream water softener or filter to prevent scale buildup.

Drain connection

Ice makers produce meltwater that must drain away. Options: gravity drain to a nearby floor drain or sink drain (simplest), or a condensate pump if no gravity drain is available. The drain line should have a slight downward slope — standing water in the drain line breeds bacteria and produces odors.

Electrical

Standard 120V, 15-amp dedicated outlet. Position per the installation template.

Freedom Column specifics

Column ice makers follow the same installation principles as other Freedom Columns: precise cabinet cutout, panel-ready door, Freedom Hinge, and SideTouchControl communication cable. Each column requires its own electrical outlet.

Post-installation

After installation, run the ice maker for 24 hours and discard the first two batches of ice. This flushes the water system and clears any installation debris. Check all water connections for leaks after 24 and 48 hours.
