TL;DR: Thermador SoftClose is a damped hinge system that lets a door glide shut instead of slamming. It is a comfort feature built around a hinge and damper, so wear shows up as a door that drops or closes unevenly.

Thermador SoftClose meaning in one line: it is a damped door system that slows the last part of a door’s travel so it glides shut instead of snapping or slamming (if your door already misbehaves, see our Thermador oven SoftClose door guide). On Thermador wall ovens it is built into the door hinges, and it works whether you ease the door closed or let go partway. The feature has no controls and no settings: it is a hinge and a damper working together, which makes it simple, quiet and easy to misunderstand when something changes.

What does Thermador SoftClose mean?

SoftClose describes how the door behaves, not what it is made of. An ordinary oven door closes under its own weight and the pull of its springs, so it can bang shut if you let go. A SoftClose door adds a damper to each hinge that resists the movement in the final stretch, absorbing the energy so the door settles against the oven frame quietly. Because it relies on hinge hardware rather than electronics, it is a durable feature, and it is one reason a Thermador door feels solid when you handle it.

The name appears throughout Thermador material, so we explain it in plain words. Our general Thermador oven glossary places SoftClose among the other terms you will see in the manuals.

How does the damped hinge work?

Inside each hinge is a spring that supports the door and a damper that controls its speed. The spring is strong enough to carry the weight of a heavy glass door through its whole swing. The damper acts like a small shock absorber. As the door approaches the closed position, the damper resists the motion, which slows it. The door does not need to be pushed hard, and it closes without a jolt.

Think of it in three phases. When you open the door, the spring balances the weight so the door stays where you leave it, within its travel. When you release it partway, the door moves toward closed at a controlled speed. In the last few inches, the damper engages and slows the motion until the door meets the seal. All of this takes place inside the hinge arm, which is why you cannot see or adjust it.

The hinge area at the side of the door is where a damped closing mechanism lives.

A few other words appear next to it, and the table below separates them.

HingeThe arm and pivot that carry the door; the SoftClose parts live here
DamperThe part that resists motion and slows the door
Door sealThe gasket that keeps heat in; separate from SoftClose
Door lockThe latch used during self-clean; also separate
Door stopThe point where the open door rests, held by the spring

It helps to keep these apart. A seal problem lets heat out, a lock problem stops a cycle, and a SoftClose problem changes how the door moves. They can look alike from a distance, because all of them involve the door, but they are different parts.

What care does SoftClose need?

Very little, which is the point. Avoid putting weight on an open oven door: a heavy roasting pan resting on it, a child sitting on it or a lean while you reach into the oven all stress the hinges and the damper. Close the door by hand rather than pushing it with a hip or a knee, and keep it free from items that jam in the gap. Wipe the front with a soft cloth, taking care that cleaners do not run into the hinge area.

Do not oil or grease the hinges. The damper depends on its own internal fluid, and extra lubricant on the outside can attract dirt or disturb the movement. For general upkeep, our Thermador oven maintenance guide lists what is worth doing and what is better left alone.

How do you recognize a worn or failed SoftClose hinge?

The signs are noticeable. The door may drop open quickly when you release it instead of staying where you leave it, which points to a weak spring. It may close with a bang because the damper no longer slows it. It may close unevenly, with one side landing before the other, which suggests that one hinge has worn more than the other. You may hear a creak, a grind or a dry squeal as the door moves, or feel it stick at a certain angle.

A door that no longer seals properly is a separate concern, because heat will escape and the oven may take longer to reach temperature. Our troubleshooting guide for the Thermador oven SoftClose door covers the behavior of a door that has stopped gliding, and the overall oven checks are in our Thermador oven troubleshooting guide.

When is a technician needed?

Hinge assemblies are heavy and under spring tension, so do not take one apart yourself. A door that is released with the springs unbalanced can fall, crush fingers or shatter the glass. A technician can replace hinges as a matched pair, adjust the door alignment and check the seal in the same visit. The work is usually modest for what it fixes, because the oven cavity and electronics are not involved.

If the oven is old and shows other problems, think about the larger picture. Our Thermador oven repair vs replace guide helps you decide, and Thermador oven repair explains how a visit works.

Frequently asked questions
Can I adjust the Thermador SoftClose speed?
No. The closing speed is built into the hinge damper and has no owner setting. If it closes too fast or too slowly, the hinge is worn.
Does SoftClose use electricity?
No. It is a mechanical system in the hinges, so it works even when the oven is off and during a power outage.
Why does my oven door slam now?
The damper has probably worn out or lost its resistance. Replacing the hinge assembly restores the soft closing action.
Is a door that drops open unsafe?
It can be, because a hot door that drops can burn or pinch. Stop using the oven and book a visit to have the hinges checked.
