Thermador cooktop terminology

From Freedom Induction to Star Burner gas, Thermador cooktops use technology-specific terms worth understanding.

  • Freedom Induction: Full-surface induction with no fixed zones. Sensor matrix detects cookware position and size anywhere on the glass.
  • Sensor matrix/array: Grid of sensors beneath Freedom Induction glass that detect cookware position, size, and material.
  • Inverter board: Electronic component that converts AC power to the specific frequency needed to drive induction coils. Each zone has its own inverter circuit.
  • Bridge zone: Feature connecting two adjacent induction zones into one large zone for griddles or oversized pans.
  • Radiant element: Electric heating coil beneath glass-ceramic surface on electric cooktops. Glows red when active.
  • Residual heat indicator: Display showing which zones are still hot after cooking — critical safety feature on glass cooktops.
  • Ferromagnetic: Cookware property required for induction — the pan base must contain iron or magnetic stainless steel. Test with a magnet.
  • Downdraft: Retractable ventilation integrated into the cooktop that rises when needed, eliminating overhead hoods.
  • Capacitive touch: Touch-sensitive controls using electrical capacitance — no mechanical buttons. Affected by moisture and grease.
