Cooktop cutout preparation
Every Thermador cooktop requires a precise cutout in the countertop. Dimensions are model-specific — a 36″ cooktop has a different cutout than a 30″ even within the same collection. Use the template provided with your unit, not generic dimensions. The countertop material matters: granite and quartz require professional cutting; laminate can often be cut by a skilled installer.
Electrical requirements
Induction cooktops: 240V circuit, 40-50 amp depending on model and number of zones. A dedicated breaker is required — do not share with other appliances. The junction box location must match the installation template.
Gas cooktops: 120V, 15-amp outlet for ignition and controls only. The gas supply line provides the cooking energy.
Electric radiant: 240V, 30-40 amp dedicated circuit. Similar to induction but typically lower amperage.
Gas supply (gas models)
A dedicated gas supply line with accessible shutoff valve is required. The supply line must be properly sized for the total BTU load — a 36″ model with a 22,000 BTU wok burner needs more gas flow than a basic 30″ four-burner. Use a certified gas installer and test all connections with a combustible gas detector.
Ventilation requirements
Thermador recommends a vent hood rated for your cooktop’s BTU output (gas) or a minimum of 400 CFM (induction). Models with integrated downdraft have their own ventilation but may still require makeup air in tightly sealed homes. Check local building codes.
Clearances
Maintain minimum clearances to combustible surfaces above and around the cooktop per the installation manual. Induction cooktops need clear airflow beneath for the cooling fan — don’t block cabinet openings below the unit.
