TL;DR: Wash the Thermador downdraft grease filters every month or two, wipe spills out of the vent slot right away, keep the lift path clear and check airflow twice a year.

Thermador downdraft maintenance comes down to three things: clean the grease filters every month or two, keep spills from running into the vent slot, and keep the lift mechanism free of crumbs and debris. A downdraft sits at the back of the cooktop and pulls steam and smoke down instead of up, so everything it captures, including grease and boil-overs, ends up in the filters and the slot. A little regular care keeps the 600 CFM blower in the HDDW36CS and the downdraft built into the CIT367TMS working at full strength.

How does a Thermador downdraft work, and why does it need care?

A downdraft ventilation unit rises from the countertop behind or beside the cooktop, usually on a motorized lift on the HDDW36CS, and pulls cooking vapors down through a slot into a blower and out through a duct. Because the air travels down past the cooktop surface, any spill or grease that falls near the slot can be drawn into it. That is the main reason downdrafts need a little more attention than a hood overhead, where the grease collects in a filter above the pan.

Most of the care is simple and takes minutes. If you have a Freedom induction cooktop with the integrated downdraft, the same rules apply, and our Thermador Freedom induction guide explains how the cooktop and the vent work as a system.

How do you clean the downdraft grease filters?

  1. Switch the unit off and let the cooktop cool. Make sure the lift is fully down or fully up according to the manual before you handle any parts.
  2. Remove the filters using the release method in the owner’s manual. They are usually metal mesh panels that lift out of the slot.
  3. Soak them in hot water with a degreasing dish soap for ten to fifteen minutes, then scrub gently with a soft brush.
  4. Rinse and dry completely. A damp filter drips onto the cooktop and can corrode.
  5. Refit them and make sure they click or sit flat so air cannot bypass them.

If the manual says the filters are dishwasher-safe, you can wash them on a normal cycle instead; dry them fully before you put them back. A cooktop that is used for frying and searing every day should be on a monthly schedule, and a lighter-use kitchen can stretch it to every two months. For the general steps that apply to any Thermador hood, see our Thermador vent hood maintenance guide.

How do you keep spills out of the vent slot?

Prevention is cheaper than cleaning. Use a lid or a splatter screen for anything that spits, keep pots from boiling over by watching the heat and lower the lift only when you are not cooking. When a spill does happen, switch the downdraft off, let the cooktop cool, and wipe the slot edge and the surrounding glass or steel with a damp cloth. Never pour water or cleaner into the vent slot, because it runs into the blower housing, and never use a spray cleaner on the slot, since the overspray lands on the electrical parts.

If a large spill has gone into the slot, stop using the downdraft and have it checked. Liquid in the blower can damage the motor, and cleaning it needs the housing opened. Our Thermador cooktop maintenance guide covers the cooktop around it.

How do you look after the lift mechanism?

A motorized lift is a moving part with tracks, and crumbs and sticky residue are its enemies. Wipe the visible edges of the lift when it is raised, keep utensils, towels and pan handles clear of the travel path and watch it move once or twice a month. It should rise and lower smoothly and quietly. A stutter, a grinding sound or a lift that stops partway is a reason to stop using it and call, because forcing it can strip a gear or jam the track. Keep fingers away from the moving edges.

What should a twice-a-year check include?

  • Lift travel: raise and lower it fully and confirm it reaches both ends.
  • Airflow: hold a tissue near the slot with the blower on a middle speed; it should be pulled firmly toward the slot.
  • Noise: listen for a rattle or a hum that was not there before, which suggests a loose duct clamp or a worn blower bearing.
  • Exterior duct and damper: if you can see the outside cap, make sure the damper opens freely and is not clogged with lint or a nest.

If the airflow is weak even with clean filters, see our guides to Thermador vent hood troubleshooting and vent hood noise before you assume the blower is failing.

Which cleaners are safe on a downdraft?

Hot water, a degreasing dish soap and a soft brush are enough for the filters, and a damp microfiber cloth is enough for the stainless steel and the glass around the slot. Avoid abrasive powders, steel wool and strong alkaline oven cleaners, which can dull the finish and attack the filter mesh. For fingerprints on stainless steel, wipe with the grain and finish with a dry cloth. If your installation recirculates the air instead of venting it outside, there is usually a charcoal filter as well; it cannot be washed and has to be replaced on the schedule in the manual, so check whether your kitchen has one before you assume the metal filters are the only ones.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean a Thermador downdraft filter?
Every month or two, more often if you fry or sear often. A greasy filter cuts the airflow and puts extra strain on the blower.
Can I put Thermador downdraft filters in the dishwasher?
Check the owner’s manual for your model. Where it allows it, wash them on a normal cycle and dry them fully before refitting.
Why is my Thermador downdraft weak?
The usual cause is a greasy filter or a blocked duct. Clean the filters first and test the airflow again.
What if the lift stops partway?
Stop using it and do not force it. Check for debris in the path, then book a visit through our Thermador vent hood repair page.
