TL;DR: A Thermador gas burner should burn steady blue. A yellow flame usually means a dirty or misaligned burner or a poor air mix. Clean and reseat the parts, and shut off the gas and call if the flame stays yellow or you smell gas.

A Thermador burner yellow flame means the gas is not mixing with enough air, so it burns incompletely. The usual causes are a dirty or clogged burner, a cap that is not seated correctly, spilled food or moisture on the burner, or, less often, an air mix or fuel-type setting that needs a technician. A healthy flame is steady and blue. If a yellow flame stays after a careful clean, or you smell gas at any point, turn the burner off and stop using it.

Normal flameSteady, mostly blue, even around the whole burner ring
Brief orange flecksOften harmless dust or salt burning off; they pass quickly
Yellow or tall lazy flameIncomplete combustion; clean and reseat the burner
Uneven flameClogged ports or a misaligned cap
Danger signsGas smell, soot on pans, headaches, or a carbon monoxide alarm
Technician itemsAir shutter, orifice, fuel conversion and pressure

What should a Thermador gas flame look like?

On a properly adjusted Thermador burner, the flame should be steady and blue, with a short inner cone and a slightly lighter outer edge, burning evenly around the full ring. It should hug the burner, make a soft rushing sound and respond smoothly when you turn the knob. Natural gas burns blue; propane may show slightly different tips, but it should still look blue and tidy.

A yellow flame is longer, softer and flickers. It may leave black soot on the bottom of your pans. Yellow shows that the fuel is not getting enough air, and incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide, which is why this symptom deserves attention. A momentary orange spark is different: dust, grease or a pinch of salt from a boil-over often glows orange for a second and then disappears. A yellow flame that lasts is the one to act on.

What are the most common causes of a yellow flame?

The easiest cause is dirt. Burner ports are small, and boiled-over food, grease or cleaning residue can clog them so that gas escapes unevenly and the mix is wrong. The second is the burner cap. If the cap is sitting crooked, or the wrong cap has been placed on a burner after cleaning, the gas flows out in the wrong pattern. The third is moisture: a wet burner base or cap after washing makes the flame sputter and look yellow until it dries.

Less commonly, the burner can have a problem with the air mix. Each burner has an air shutter or equivalent that sets the amount of air entering with the gas, and it can be affected by lint, spider webs or poor adjustment. A range converted between natural gas and propane without the right parts may also burn yellow. The air shutter, orifices and gas pressure are technician territory. How do you clean and reseat a Thermador burner safely?

Make sure all burners are off and cool. Lift off the burner cap and, on most models, the base, and lay them on a towel. Wash the parts with warm water and a little dish soap. Use a soft brush or a toothpick to clear the ports along the edge of the burner, without enlarging them or poking a pin into the gas opening in the center. Do not use a metal wire in the ports, since scratching changes how the gas flows.

Dry the parts thoroughly. Let them air dry for a while or wipe them and leave them for an hour, because trapped moisture causes yellow and uneven flames. Reassemble in the right order and check that the cap sits flat and fully seated, with the ignition electrode clear. Light the burner and watch. If the flame is blue and even, the problem was dirt or placement. Our Thermador Star burner guide shows the parts and how they fit together.

When is a yellow flame a safety problem?

Any time you smell gas, stop. Turn off all burners, do not use switches or flames, open windows and leave the house, then call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. That is not a repair question. A yellow flame without a gas smell is still a safety concern if it persists, because incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. Soot on cookware, a stuffy or headachy feeling when the cooktop runs, or an alarm from a carbon monoxide detector are reasons to stop using the burner and ventilate.

Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas, and run the hood when you cook. Our Thermador cooktop safety and Thermador range safety guides explain good habits for gas cooking.

What will a technician check?

A technician starts with the same cleaning and reseating, then checks the gas type and pressure, the orifice size for the fuel in use, the air shutter setting and the condition of the burner itself. They also check the ventilation and the supply line. If the range was converted between fuels or moved to a new home, they confirm that the conversion was done correctly. A burner that still burns yellow after all that may be warped or damaged and need replacing.

While they are there, ask them to check the other burners and the ignition. A simple routine also helps: wipe spills as soon as the burner has cooled, keep the burner caps dry and seated after every wash, and glance at the flame whenever you light a burner so that a change is noticed early. Regular cleaning keeps this problem from returning, and our Thermador cooktop maintenance guide sets out a simple schedule. For wider symptoms, see Thermador cooktop troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions
Is a yellow flame on a gas cooktop dangerous?
It can be, because it signals incomplete combustion that may produce carbon monoxide. If it persists after cleaning, stop using the burner and have it checked.
Why is only one Thermador burner yellow?
That points to that burner: a clogged port, a misplaced cap or moisture. Clean and reseat it before looking further.
Are orange flecks in the flame a problem?
Short orange flashes are usually dust or salt burning off. They are not a concern unless the flame is yellow most of the time.
Do I need a technician for a yellow flame?
If cleaning does not fix it, yes, since air and gas adjustments need tools and training. Book a visit and mention the symptom.
