Maintenance for Thermador gas, induction, and electric cooktops — glass cleaning, Star Burner care, induction zone care, and ventilation.

Induction glass care

Clean the glass surface after every cooking session with a dedicated cooktop cleaner and a soft cloth. For stuck-on food, use a cooktop scraper held at a 30° angle. Never use abrasive pads or cleaners — they scratch the glass and can damage the sensor layer on Freedom Induction models. Remove spills promptly — sugar-based spills can bond to hot glass and cause permanent damage.

Gas Star Burner maintenance

Remove and clean burner caps weekly. Clear all flame ports with a pin (never a toothpick). Wash caps in warm soapy water and dry completely. Check that each cap sits flat and aligned with the burner base. Season cast-iron grates with cooking oil to prevent rust — never dishwasher.

Electric radiant care

Clean the glass surface as for induction. Don’t slide pots across the surface — rough pan bottoms scratch the glass. Check element connections annually for corrosion. Replace any element that heats unevenly or has visible hot spots.

Ventilation check

Ensure adequate ventilation beneath the cooktop — induction models have cooling fans that need airflow. Check that cabinet openings below the cooktop aren’t blocked by stored items. For cooktops with integrated downdraft, clean the downdraft channel annually.

Frequently asked questions about Thermador cooktops
What is Freedom Induction?
Unlike standard induction cooktops with fixed zones, Freedom Induction has no zone markings. The entire glass surface is active — place any compatible pan anywhere and the sensor matrix automatically detects its position and size, activating only the coils beneath it.
What cookware works with induction?
Only ferromagnetic cookware: cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, and enameled cast iron. Test with a magnet — if it sticks firmly to the pan bottom, it’s compatible. Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel won’t heat.
Is gas or induction more efficient?
Induction is 85-90% efficient (energy to food) vs 40-55% for gas. Water boils about twice as fast on induction. However, gas gives visual flame feedback that some cooks prefer.
Can a cracked cooktop glass be repaired?
No — the entire glass panel must be replaced. It’s one piece. Do not use a cracked cooktop — cracks can allow spills to reach electrical components.
What’s a bridge zone?
A bridge zone connects two adjacent induction zones into one large zone for griddles or roasting pans. Activate it from the touch controls when using oversized cookware.

Important notes for Thermador cooktop owners

  • Always use genuine OEM parts — aftermarket components may fit but can compromise performance, safety, and warranty coverage on Thermador appliances
  • Never ignore error codes — Thermador codes are diagnostic aids designed to prevent small issues from becoming major failures. Address them promptly
  • Keep your owners manual accessible — it contains model-specific maintenance schedules and troubleshooting trees. Digital versions are available on the Thermador official site
  • Document issues before calling — note error codes, symptoms, when they started, and patterns. This helps the technician diagnose faster
  • Use surge protectors — power fluctuations damage electronic control boards. A quality surge protector protects your investment

Preventive maintenance saves money

Regular maintenance is the most cost-effective way to extend your Thermador cooktop lifespan and avoid expensive emergency repairs.

  • Annual professional inspection — catches wear before failure. Critical for gas connections, sealed systems, and electronics
  • Filter replacements on schedule — water, air, and carbon filters have finite lifespans. Running past service life degrades performance
  • Gasket and seal checks — door gaskets and hose connections develop micro-leaks over time. Quarterly visual inspection prevents damage
  • Cleaning as maintenance — buildup of grease, food debris, mineral scale, and dust directly contributes to component failure
