Master Thermador Freedom Induction — full-surface cooking, cookware compatibility, power management, and getting the most from zoneless induction.

How Freedom Induction works

Unlike traditional induction cooktops with fixed zones, Freedom Induction has no marked cooking areas. A matrix of small induction coils covers the entire glass surface. Sensors beneath the glass detect when and where you place a pan, activating only the coils directly beneath it. Move a pot anywhere on the surface — the active coils follow it. Place multiple pots of different sizes in any arrangement.

Cookware requirements

Cookware must be induction-compatible — the base must contain ferromagnetic material (iron or magnetic stainless steel). Test with a magnet: if it sticks firmly to the pan bottom, it works. Minimum pan diameter depends on the coil matrix — typically 5″ minimum. Very small pans may not be detected. Flat-bottomed pans work best; warped bases reduce efficiency.

Power management

Freedom Induction distributes total available power across active zones. If you’re running 4 pots at high power, each gets slightly less than if running alone. The system prioritizes the most recently adjusted zone. For maximum power on one pot, reduce or turn off others.

Cleaning Freedom Induction

The full glass surface must be kept spotlessly clean — food debris between the glass and a pan reduces sensor accuracy and can burn onto the surface. Clean after every use with dedicated induction cleaner. The sensor matrix is sensitive — never use magnetic scrubbers or cleaners that could interfere with the sensors.

Troubleshooting

If a pan isn’t detected: verify compatibility (magnet test), ensure minimum size, center the pan. If E2 appears (sensor array error), remove all items from the surface, clean thoroughly, and retry with a single pan.

Frequently asked questions about Thermador cooktops
What is Freedom Induction?
Unlike standard induction cooktops with fixed zones, Freedom Induction has no zone markings. The entire glass surface is active — place any compatible pan anywhere and the sensor matrix automatically detects its position and size, activating only the coils beneath it.
What cookware works with induction?
Only ferromagnetic cookware: cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, and enameled cast iron. Test with a magnet — if it sticks firmly to the pan bottom, it’s compatible. Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel won’t heat.
Is gas or induction more efficient?
Induction is 85-90% efficient (energy to food) vs 40-55% for gas. Water boils about twice as fast on induction. However, gas gives visual flame feedback that some cooks prefer.
Can a cracked cooktop glass be repaired?
No — the entire glass panel must be replaced. It’s one piece. Do not use a cracked cooktop — cracks can allow spills to reach electrical components.
What’s a bridge zone?
A bridge zone connects two adjacent induction zones into one large zone for griddles or roasting pans. Activate it from the touch controls when using oversized cookware.

Important notes for Thermador cooktop owners

  • Always use genuine OEM parts — aftermarket components may fit but can compromise performance, safety, and warranty coverage on Thermador appliances
  • Never ignore error codes — Thermador codes are diagnostic aids designed to prevent small issues from becoming major failures. Address them promptly
  • Keep your owners manual accessible — it contains model-specific maintenance schedules and troubleshooting trees. Digital versions are available on the Thermador official site
  • Document issues before calling — note error codes, symptoms, when they started, and patterns. This helps the technician diagnose faster
  • Use surge protectors — power fluctuations damage electronic control boards. A quality surge protector protects your investment

When DIY troubleshooting is not enough

Some Thermador cooktop issues can be resolved with the steps in this guide. However, call a certified technician immediately if you encounter:

  1. Gas smell (gas models) — turn off the appliance, open windows, leave the house, call from outside
  2. Burning smell or smoke — disconnect power immediately. Do not use until inspected
  3. Electrical sparking — turn off at the circuit breaker. Wiring or component failure
  4. Water leaking inside walls — shut off supply and call to prevent water damage
  5. Error codes that return after power reset — persistent codes indicate real component failure
  6. Sealed system issues — compressor, refrigerant work requires EPA-certified technicians
