About Thermador cooktops.

Thermador cooktops in gas, induction, and electric — featuring the patented Star Burner, Freedom Induction full-surface cooking, ExtraLow simmer, and up to 22,000 BTU wok burners.

Thermador cooktop technologies

Freedom Induction is Thermador’s most innovative cooktop — a full-surface induction system with no fixed cooking zones. Place any compatible cookware anywhere on the glass surface, and the sensor array detects the pot position and activates only the coils beneath it. Move pots freely across the surface without reconfiguring zones. This technology uses a matrix of small induction coils controlled by a multi-zone inverter system.

Gas cooktops with Star Burners deliver 56% more flame coverage than round burners. The five-pointed star design eliminates cold spots and supports ExtraLow simmer down to 100°F. Professional series models include a 22,000 BTU central wok burner for high-heat cooking.

Available configurations

Thermador cooktops come in 30″, 36″, and 45″ widths in gas, induction, and electric radiant. The Masterpiece collection integrates with Thermador ventilation systems for a coordinated kitchen design. Select models feature integrated downdraft ventilation that eliminates the need for a separate hood.

Common issues

Freedom Induction diagnostics require specialized tools to test individual coil segments in the sensor array. Gas Star Burner clogging occurs more frequently than round burners due to the increased number of flame ports. Cracked glass cooktops (induction and electric) require full panel replacement. Touch control responsiveness issues often trace to moisture or grease on the capacitive sensor surface.

Maintenance tips

For induction: clean the glass surface after every use with a non-abrasive cleaner. For gas: clean Star Burner ports weekly with a pin to prevent clogging. Check that cast-iron grates sit level. For all types: inspect the power connection annually and verify that the cooktop is properly grounded.

Frequently asked questions about Thermador cooktops
What is Freedom Induction?
Unlike standard induction cooktops with fixed zones, Freedom Induction has no zone markings. The entire glass surface is active — place any compatible pan anywhere and the sensor matrix automatically detects its position and size, activating only the coils beneath it.
What cookware works with induction?
Only ferromagnetic cookware: cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, and enameled cast iron. Test with a magnet — if it sticks firmly to the pan bottom, it’s compatible. Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel won’t heat.
Is gas or induction more efficient?
Induction is 85-90% efficient (energy to food) vs 40-55% for gas. Water boils about twice as fast on induction. However, gas gives visual flame feedback that some cooks prefer.
Can a cracked cooktop glass be repaired?
No — the entire glass panel must be replaced. It’s one piece. Do not use a cracked cooktop — cracks can allow spills to reach electrical components.
What’s a bridge zone?
A bridge zone connects two adjacent induction zones into one large zone for griddles or roasting pans. Activate it from the touch controls when using oversized cookware.
