Thermador Cooktop: Repair vs. Replace

When to repair and when to replace your Thermador cooktop — cost considerations for induction coils, cracked glass, gas valves, and inverter boards.

Average lifespan

Thermador cooktops last 15-20 years with proper care. Gas cooktops tend to last longer than induction (fewer electronic components), but induction coils themselves have no moving parts and rarely fail.

When to repair

Individual Star Burner igniter replacement. Single induction zone coil or inverter board failure. Touch control board replacement. Gas valve replacement (individual burner). Element replacement on electric models. These are all cost-effective repairs regardless of the cooktop’s age.

When to replace

Cracked glass is the most common replacement trigger — the entire glass panel must be replaced, and on some models the panel cost approaches a new cooktop. Freedom Induction models with multiple failed coil segments may reach a cost threshold where replacement is more practical. Gas cooktops with corroded burner bases or gas manifold leaks on units over 15 years old.

Cracked glass considerations

A cracked cooktop glass is a safety issue — cracks can allow spills to reach electrical components (induction/electric) or allow gas to escape (some gas models with glass cooktops). Do not use a cracked cooktop. Glass replacement is a panel swap — the entire surface is one piece. Cost varies significantly by model and size.

Frequently asked questions about Thermador cooktops
What is Freedom Induction?
Unlike standard induction cooktops with fixed zones, Freedom Induction has no zone markings. The entire glass surface is active — place any compatible pan anywhere and the sensor matrix automatically detects its position and size, activating only the coils beneath it.
What cookware works with induction?
Only ferromagnetic cookware: cast iron, magnetic stainless steel, and enameled cast iron. Test with a magnet — if it sticks firmly to the pan bottom, it’s compatible. Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel won’t heat.
Is gas or induction more efficient?
Induction is 85-90% efficient (energy to food) vs 40-55% for gas. Water boils about twice as fast on induction. However, gas gives visual flame feedback that some cooks prefer.
Can a cracked cooktop glass be repaired?
No — the entire glass panel must be replaced. It’s one piece. Do not use a cracked cooktop — cracks can allow spills to reach electrical components.
What’s a bridge zone?
A bridge zone connects two adjacent induction zones into one large zone for griddles or roasting pans. Activate it from the touch controls when using oversized cookware.

Important notes for Thermador cooktop owners

  • Always use genuine OEM parts — aftermarket components may fit but can compromise performance, safety, and warranty coverage on Thermador appliances
  • Never ignore error codes — Thermador codes are diagnostic aids designed to prevent small issues from becoming major failures. Address them promptly
  • Keep your owners manual accessible — it contains model-specific maintenance schedules and troubleshooting trees. Digital versions are available on the Thermador official site
  • Document issues before calling — note error codes, symptoms, when they started, and patterns. This helps the technician diagnose faster
  • Use surge protectors — power fluctuations damage electronic control boards. A quality surge protector protects your investment

Making the right investment decision

Thermador appliances are premium investments designed for 15-20 years of service. When evaluating options, consider:

  • Age — under 10 years: almost always repair. 10-15: evaluate cost. Over 15: consider replacement for major repairs
  • Cost threshold — repair exceeding 50% of a new equivalent unit usually favors replacement
  • Repair frequency — a single repair is normal. Multiple in 12 months suggests systemic aging
  • Parts availability — discontinued models may have limited parts, extending repair timelines
  • Energy efficiency — newer models may offer savings that offset part of replacement cost

Our technicians provide honest repair-vs-replace recommendations. Schedule service online for a diagnostic evaluation.
